The Mirage, a pivotal establishment in Las Vegas’ transformation from a kitschy past to a luxurious present, is preparing for a significant change. The Seminole Tribe of Florida, which owns and operates the resort, announced on Tuesday that The Mirage will close on July 17. This closure marks the beginning of its transition into the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas.
The Mirage has long been an iconic part of the Las Vegas Strip. However, its impending closure signals the end of an era. The new Hard Rock Guitar Hotel, a 700-foot-tall structure shaped like a guitar, will soon dominate the Strip. This project received unanimous approval from Clark County commissioners last March.
All room and show reservations for dates after July 14 will be canceled and refunded, according to a press release from the Seminole Tribe. The tribe also announced that it will provide $80 million in severance packages to employees who remain until the transition is complete. However, the exact duration of the renovation remains unspecified.
Hints of The Mirage’s impending closure emerged last month when an internal memo from Cirque du Soleil revealed that “The Beatles LOVE” would permanently close on July 7. The memo cited an upcoming renovation as the reason for the show’s termination.
The Mirage will undergo a comprehensive renovation under the Seminole Tribe, which purchased the operating rights from MGM Resorts in December 2022 for $1.1 billion. Initially, there were reports that the property would remain open during the transition, but this is no longer the case.
This significant development marks a somber moment for Las Vegas as it bids farewell to one of its most storied resorts.
